| My sculptures and paintings are figurative in nature; the abstraction of the images is done in the interest of composition and imagination. I enjoy the use of line and texture as they communicate emotion and connect my hand to the work. Shape and color help me create a sense of character and space. For sculpture, earthy nature of stoneware makes it a favorite medium. The content considers the interaction of the figure with our human, spiritual and physical environments. Subtle visual events that impact me become metaphors in my work for the universal human condition. My varied background in education, river travel, mountaineering, and alpine living has provided treasured opportunities to observe the human experience in intense, beautiful and creative environments. My art reflects the joy in the exploration of the relationships between perception and expression, between experience and meaning.
